This week, Jason Baker addressed the latest updates with the OpenStack project. Baker acknowledged that since OpenStack is such a huge project with so many moving parts, there are a few ways to continue one’s OpenStack education — such as third party training and certification to meetups to many community-contributed tutorials. He listed some of his favorite resources from the past month, including various OpenStack tutorials.

Stretching the elastic cloud: Evolving OpenStack for scale | OpenStack Superuser

Mark Muehl shared updates from the Comcast Elastic Cloud team regarding the evolution of their OpenStack-powered cloud. Muehl stated that the Comcast team is focusing their attention to helping OpenStack evolve in two key areas – scalability and operational efficiency. Muehl added that as more and more large enterprises turn to OpenStack to meet increasingly large and complex cloud challenges, OpenStack will need to take steps forward in how it will meet said challenges.  

OpenStack Ecosystem Storage Solutions from Tesora and Scality | HPE

Stephen Spector, Cloud Evangelist at Hewlett Packard Enterprise, highlighted some of the ecosystem vendors working with the HPE Helion OpenStack solution, such as Tesora and Scality. Scality is an industry leader in software-defined storage and Tesora is the eading contributor to the OpenStack Trove project and developer of Tesora DBaaS Platform Enterprise Edition. In interviews with both Scality’s VP of Marketing Leo Leung and Tesora’s CTO Amrith Kumar, Spector digs into the value-add of both companies for OpenStack customers.

Five Elements for A Successful OpenStack Deployment | eWeek

Pete Chadwick addresses the challenges that can come with an OpenStack deployment. A recent survey by SUSE stated that OpenStack adoption is at an all time high, and that 81 percent of senior IT professionals at large companies have moved (or plan to move) to an OpenStack private cloud. In order to have a successful OpenStack deployment, Chadwick offers his advice, including examination of the supported model of OpenStack deployment.

Recently, VMblog and CloudCow surveyed nearly 700 technology professionals on the subject of understanding and the adoption of OpenStack.  The survey reflects a wide range of global industries and company sizes, varying from less than 10 to more than 10,000 employees. The infographic details the results of the survey and imply that OpenStack adoption is growing, but there are still challenges to overcome like the security model, lack of tools, and cost management.
