OpenStack “L” Release Named: Liberty

Author: Arthur Berezin

OpenStack names each release in alphabetic order, the first release named Austin, second release named Bexter, third Cactus and so on, when the chosen name for a releases is somehow related to the place where the semi-annual OepnStack Design Summit takes place, in which all planning happens. In the previous release cycle the OpenStack Design Summit took place in Paris, the release was named “Kilo” as the Kilogram mass unit was originally declared in a small town next to Paris.

The upcoming design summit will be held in  Vancouver, Canada (18-22 May 2015). The OpenStack foundation held a naming poll with 4 proposed names: Liberty, London, Lizard, Love – Almost 1500 people participated the voting picking their preferred naming for the next release, only 6 votes separated between “Lizard” which came second and the preferred name who won the poll and determined the naming for the next release – “Liberty“.

Liberty is a small village in Canada with population of about 100 people.
